“Morning Trees, Shadows” Trees in morning light as mountain shadows recede across a meadow.

I made this photograph on the final morning of my late-August visit to the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite. Since I had until noon to vacate my campsite, I figured I would do some early morning photography before breaking camp. I had a particular sunrise photograph in mind, and after completing that I looked around with no particular agenda and decided to head up to the meadows around Tioga Pass.

“Spring Trees, Flowers, and Meadow, Applecross” — Spring grass, wildflowers, and trees in a meadow at Applecross, Scotland.

This scene on the western Scotland coast not far from Skye was a pleasant surprise. We were on a long drive to the village of Applecross, and our route had taken us through a lot of typical country — rugged coastal areas, broad valleys, high peaks with a dusting of new snow. But out here a lot of the country seemed rocky and rough with few trees. But as we came to a bridge over the River Applecross, suddenly everything was green, the broom flowers were yellow, and there were spring-green trees.

Packender Tiefflug im Rahmen des Manövers „Skyfall“: Ein AH-64 Apache-Kampfhubschrauber der 12. US-Kampfhubschrauberbrigade zeigt sich hier im Luftraum über Auerbach. Das entscheidende Detail: Das orange/blaue Abzeichen auf der Maschine – der markante, blaue Greifenkopf vor orangefarbenen Flammen – kennzeichnet sie unverkennbar als Teil der 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. “Gruinard Beach” — Surf rolls in at Gruinard Beach, Scotland.

We passed this large beach on our way from Ullapool to Applecross, Scotland this past May. We were on a long day trip loop drive out there. I don’t think I really had a good idea of what we’d see or what kinds of country we would pass through, and I was surprised by the many places where our route took us along the ocean coast. This beautiful beach seems to be shallow, with the tides uncovering a wide swath of sand. And, as is so common in this part of Scotland, we could see both the ocean waters and distant high peaks.

“Tuolumne Sunset” — Looking west at sunset sky, Tuolumne Meadows.

On this late-August evening I headed to a spot along the Tuolumne River that I had scouted earlier that afternoon. I’ve previously photographed from this location at sunset, so I had a general idea of what I would be working with. The photograph I had in mind was not this one — it fact, the planned photograph had me pointing the camera in exactly the opposite direction, toward the Sierra Nevada crest.

“Man on Steps, Dublin” — A man with a cell phone sits on stone steps, Dublin.

There’s a lot to see and do in Dublin, Ireland. Some cities seem rather sedate, but at least in the central area of Dublin where we spent time this past May, the streets and sidewalks were full of people — the place felt very alive. While a few day’s visit does not make me an expert — far from it — this city felt like it had a bit of an “edge,” which I think of as a good thing. All of this made it a fine place to do some photography in the streets.
