The Best Generations Were the Best to their Parents

Once Ibn ‘Umar may Allah be pleased with them was travelling and he met a Bedouin on the way, so he gave him a ride on his donkey, then Ibn Umar may Allah be pleased with him gave him his turban, Ibn Deenar may Allah have mercy upon him says that, said to Ibn ‘Umar may Allah be pleased with him "he is a Bedouin, and a little satisfies them" so Ibn 'Umar may Allah be pleased with him replied, "This Bedouin's father was a close friend of ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab may Allah be pleased with him and I heard the Prophet, sallallaahualayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) saying: “The best dutifulness is when the son is kind to his father’s close friends.” [Muslim].”
Some other stories that have reached us of the Tabi’oon (the generation followed by the Companions of Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )) and their kindness and good treatment of their parents are as follows:
● Al-Fadhl bin Yahya may Allah have mercy upon him was kind to his father, who habitually made ablution with warm water. When they were both imprisoned, the jailer forbade Al-Fadhl to kindle fire to heat water for his father, so he drew a brass vessel full of water near a lamp; when morning came the water had become hot and thus his father could make ablution with it. The jailer then forbade him to heat water by using the lamp, so he took the vessel to his bed and attached it to his stomach; when morning came the water had become slightly warm.

● Hafsah bint Siren may Allah have mercy upon her used to ask forgiveness for her son Huthayl, may Allah have mercy upon him and says, “Huthayl used to bring sugar cane and dry it out during the summer so that it would give no smoke when burnt.

When winter came, he would quietly light a fire with this dried cane behind me while I was praying during the night, just enough to warm me without me being disturbed by its smoke. I would say to him: ‘O son! Go to your family tonight’, and he would reply: ‘They do not need anything’; so I would allow him to stay and he would sometimes stay until morning.”

● Muhammad ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman may Allah have mercy upon him was very dutiful to his father and whenever his father would call him, he would not answer him while sitting down, but would jump up and rush to stand next to his head (while he was lying down) to reply to his requests, and if he did not understand then he would not ask him for an explanation but would ask others with them in the room out of respect.

● Az-Zubayr ibn Hisham may Allah have mercy upon him was very dutiful to his father, and whenever he received cold water (for drinking) in the summer, he would first taste it, if he found it cold enough, then he would send to his father.

● ‘Awn ibn ‘Abdullah may Allah have mercy upon him was called by his mother once, and when he answered his voice was a little too loud, so he freed two slaves for atonement.

● Haywah ibn Shurayh may Allah have mercy upon him was a great Muslim scholar. Once, while he was giving a lecture, his mother called him and said: “O Haywah! Get up and feed the chickens” so he left the study circle and did as she asked.

The Bottle Cottage

Thought we could take a look at the PALLETS part of this building today.

When collection bottles in Nelspruit I saw at the Glass place, they had pallets for free. Then big bins of glass off cuts.  I can use this!

 Long ago I met a chap that made Damp Proofing with Polystyrene, as you may well know that stuff is terrible for the ecology, just does NOT break down and go away. Recycling for something to become yet another piece of junk to be tossed in a landfill is…. Moronic. By dissolving Polystyrene into a chemical called Xylene until is get you get a thick liquid, that you then “paint” onto your problem wall. The , I called it Polyxylene here, is basically liquid plastic, when applied it soaks into the wall and sets in a very thin plastic … sheet? Inside the wall. Ok. I would need that but thought about what I had on hand. Pallets, glass and Polyxylene.

Now if I dissolved enough Polystyrene I could make a thick glue. Then use the big off cuts to put in the gaps of the pallets. Used silicone to attach the glass, coated that with thick Polyxylene, cruche different coloured glass into small pieces and glued them on. The thick Polyxylene takes a long time to dry, two days even in the hot Bushveld. But. Had other ideas for the Pallet Panels.

In the shed at VeloGecko was a lot of Roof Waterproofing cans of paint and those strips of clothe one puts down then paints over. This would protect the rather poor wood pallets are made of. As you see by the photos I did a few variations of these ideas, and the end result…….

Hi friends!

One of the things that’s incredibly satisfying about being a creative (even in an amateur’s capacity) is exploring other people’s worlds and finding out what they’re doing. A few months back, yours truly stumbled upon a new microfiction writing contest. Usually that’s enough to peak my interest and do some research, and what I found was a pretty unique take on the form.

For those not familiar, Whimsy is a monthly microfiction contest in which writers are given 300 words to write something a little less serious. Something a little more off the beaten path. Each edition comes with a unique theme and subtheme. The subtheme comes in the form of a “whim,” a guiding set of words and phrases to help establish a direction within the story. On top of that, the story must include a provided object that is unique to each person. However, entrants are given a week to finish their story.

The contest is product of one Timothy Hayes, who apparently came into the world of writing contests back during 2020. Hayes says on the contest’s website that “One of the ironies of writing contests is that lighthearted stories can have a hard time being taken seriously. Whimsy exists to change that, and to create a dedicated space for all those weird and wonderful stories to shine in their own right.” He and the team behind Whimsy cite a number of media as what they aim to achieve with the competition, including The Princess Bride, Everything Everywhere All at Once (a personal favorite), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and What We Do in the Shadows among a number of other multimedia examples.

So, how’d it go for VS Virsus? Well, not good. Unlike others discussed on the blog, the Whimsy contests only have one round, so either someone wins or they don’t. A total of 10 people are highlighted at the end of it all (five winners and five runner-ups). The August contest had nearly 250 people, not exactly a big pool, but not small by any means. Writers last month had the theme “Happy Travels.” For my “whim,” I choose “This Wasn’t on the Itinerary,” and was required to include a stone tablet as my object. Needless to say, we didn’t make it.

However, that shouldn’t take away from how awesome a project this series truly is. It has strong, unique identity carved out for itself, and it was genuinely challenging not just to default to something more gritty and action-packed while thinking about the themes. Media that is quiet and contemplative, even joyful and fun, can be engaging, and its nice to see other authors taking up that mission. Despite not making it to the finals, I did wanna feature my story for those who are curious. There is also a chance It’ll get revised and rereleased later on. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

On a New Path, Somewhere Between Forest and City Emeria lived in routine, which is why she flew from Dublin to the other side of the world. Tokyo had called out many times before, but flights and travel cost money. Eventually, she found a job that afforded her comfort, enough days off to try biking and painting. Still, hobbies couldn’t scratch the itch of boredom at home.
The airport, and the area just outside, was busy. The fading sun of an early evening shone on suit-wearing salarymen walking almost in lockstep. She couldn’t help but snort in public.
She thought about all the tourist spots she had talked over with friends. Snacks from konbenis. A bullet train to Shibuya. Walking through parks in Nara. After finally making it, adventure pulled her into something else.
The somewhat lonely businesswoman started walking through back alleys. In them she found craftsmen sculpting pottery, clothing designers measuring angles, chefs making the same bowl of ramen over and over.
Eventually, alleyways led to outskirts. Bright lights and tall buildings faded into lush greenery. Stone paths continued to cover the forest floor. The scene felt like a gateway.
It must have been five minutes before stumbling upon a series of tiny homes. In one yard, an elderly man watered vegetable plants. The two locked eyes for a few seconds before the man bowed and continued his task.
On the other side of his house sat a headstone, upright in the ground. Characters she could not read carved into its face. Watered flowers sat inside a glass bottle next to it. They looked…alive.
The rest of the week looked exactly as Emeria had planned. All the spots she had dreamed of. On the flight home, she thought of noodles and hidden places with old men caring for the dead.Thanks for reading!
