The river sits above the field at the bottom of my garden, contained by embankments established and maintained in various forms for nearly 500 years, visible here above this morning’s sunrise mist.

A wide early-morning view across the flat Fenland landscape towards the River Nene, beneath a softly glowing peach and pale orange sky. Low sunrise mist hangs across the fields, obscuring much of the middle distance and reducing the landscape to a series of delicate horizontal layers. In the foreground, a dark field stretches across the lower edge of the photograph, with trees and vegetation rising at the right. A slender utility pole stands near the centre. Beyond it, the long dark line of the river embankment crosses the image from side to side; the Nene itself is hidden behind the bank and sits above the level of the surrounding fields.
