I think at times I come off as an implacable hater of the humid east...but when you've been to the outer lands and witnessed dawn come over you from across the Atlantic, crimson forests swaying in the Canadian wind...you just can't hate it.

View from Bluff Trail, Montana de Oro State Park. Having spent the past many years of my life in LA and then NYC, I'm not used to the foggy coast, so I thought I was on a different planet.

Headed out on the ocean this morning for a short adventure. Just now tied up at an offshore island which I will enjoy for the weekend. Nice weather on today’s leg with not-so-nice weather predicted for the return. Will need to embrace whatever Mother Nature provides!

Photo taken on white sailboat looking forward toward horizon. Most of the left (“port”) side of boat is seen. The forward-most sail (“jib”) is also in view. A bit of land is seen on the left. Blue sky overhead with some puffy white clouds. I took this photo while sailing out of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. The point of land on the left is Castle Hill, Rhode Island, which is one of the last bits of the bay (on this side) seen before entering the open ocean.

Beautiful day at Mad River Beach County Park. This photograph shows a bit of the beach as well as the slopes one crosses to access the coastal area. In the distance, Trinidad can just be seen (center left). As for the photo, the upper half shows brilliant blue skies with a variety of white and grey cloud forms. Just below, Pacific Ocean waves roll in from the left and some green and yellow coastal vegetation anchors the right. Much of the lower half is sand, shaped by the wind and tides. In the immediate foreground, pieces of driftwood mix with the sand and plants. Clouds and waves at Mad River Beach County Park. This photograph shows the incoming Pacific Ocean waves in the lower half while the upper half is fantastic white cloud forms in a blue sky that is dark blue on the top and lighter blue between the lower cloud formations. A pair of harbor seals watch from the waves (Though they are not necessarily visible in this photo! My harbor seal photos are always a bit of a guesstimate, given the overall composition and the use of a basic phone to document the scene. Thanks to those photographers who have good equipment and know how to use it, and who don’t mind sharing their beautiful crisp close-up photos of marine life!)

This is a black and white sports photo in landscape format of a young woman surfing at sunrise. Hermosa Beach, California (2013). Stretching diagonally across the photo from the lower left corner towards the upper right is the foaming surf of a breaking wave that's moving from right to left. In the centre of the image is our teen surfer, surfing across the wave from right to left. She is viewed from about five metres away and two metres above and with her filling about half the height of the photo. Her body is facing the camera while her head is angled ahead, inline with the surfboard. She has dark hair that is tied behind her head, is wearing a light toned t-shirt with 'Redondo' printed on the front and covering her wetsuit. Below her waist is obscured by the breaking wave. The next day, August 22, I got up early to catch CalTrain to San Jose, where I would transfer to the Coast Starlight for San Luis Obispo. I took this photo just before I left the hostel. I like CalTrain's new electric trains, and I met 2 MAMILs who considered their bikes so precious that they would not tie them to the bike rack on the train.

Trees frame the scene and a person by an outdoor table enjoying the scenery. In the distance is the SF bay and Golden Gate Bridge under a little cloud.
