I switched to my 70-300IS yesterday as a supposed compromise over the 100mm macro, because I keep missing out on the odd bird shot. I have a 500D close up filter which works quite well with this as a macro lens. It's a slight pain to use as the focus distance is quite tightly defined but the zoom combined with image stabilisation makes it probably a better option than the macro lens, not a compromise at all!
