A photograph of a large blue bin on the left of the image, in front of a back alley laneway. The walls of the laneway are mostly brick, but the only clue that they are brick is the patterns as they are completely covered in all kinds of graffiti. Most of the graffiti is indistinguishable as the thing that is mainly in focus in the image is the bin, with a medium blur on the laneway. The graffiti art is not a single large mural but a collection of many smaller or medium sized pieces all overlapping, in various different colours and arrangements, where it can be hard to tell where one ends and another begins. The pavement on the ground is mostly clean and clear save for a few white streaks. The bin has a few black and red marker pen scrawls on it, and the bin is slightly propped open. It is day time and light is filtering in through the tall buildings. A bar light can be seen hanging from the side of one of the buildings at the end of the alley before the turn of a corner.

I went for a quick walk during my lunch break on Thursday, and on a little reserve underneath some of those huge transmission towers there was a patch of grass with some tiny purple flowers that a little fleet of bees seemed particularly interested in.

I got a bunch of great bee shots, but I particularly love this one. I think I like the way it captures the sense of the continuous "on the move" that all of the bees had, as well as the vastness of the area (in comparison to the size of the bees), as well as the fact that you can see the rather large pollen quarry it's hauling around. Aside from a little sharpen, this is straight off the camera.

I'll probably stick some of the others up at some point, but the tricky part will be whittling down the selection...!

A photograph taken low-down in grass, looking side-on at a bee. The bee is travelling from right to left and is on the left third of the image, approximately vertically centered. The bee does not take up much space in the image. The bee's body is mostly flat, with its legs hanging below it. Hanging off at least one leg is a large ball of yellow pollen, which has a slight sticky sheen to it. Bits of loose pollen can also be stuck to the bee's fuzz. The bees wings are moving rapidly and while they can be seen close to the body, the motion blur fans them out further away from the body to the point where they are not clearly visible. The grass is not uniform - it is made up of a mixture of green and straw-coloured strands, and they are pointing in different directions. There is heavy depth-of-field blur, and the only grass really in focus is in the same plane as the bee. In the background you cannot see the sky, it just gradates to a grassy green.

While going on a walk at Listerfield lake late last year, there were a few roos around. Most of them were lying about and the odd one was moseying about. They're not generally bothered by people walking by and will hop about a bit but keep a little bit of distance.

A photograph of a kangaroo. It is on the right third of the photo, and its body is facing towards the right, but its head is looking directly at the camera. It is surrounded by grassy land. There is a large light-grey fallen tree trunk in the background across the top of the photo, a thin branch in the foreground on the left, and in front of the body of the kangaroo is a thin out of focus twiggy branch. The ground is littered with leaf and bark material. The kangaroo is a tan brown and light grey colour. It has very large ears which are a darker grey on the inside. Its arms are hanging loosely down in front of it, and at the end of its arms are its paws which have decently sized claws. Its tail is almost as long as its body, and its feet look solid and form a definite L shape. It has large dark eyes and a dark nose.

My understanding of the qualifiers of are to post bad photos or photos that you just don't like in order to break out of the feeling of the need to perform. For me, I think that applies to exercising control over things like focus, composition, and exposure. The first photos were surprisingly difficult to post, but now it's actually quite cathartic.

I don't know if this photo qualifies for , or maybe is having its intended effect, because I actually don't think I dislike it, and I don't think it's a bad photo, but I reckon a week or two ago I almost certainly would have thought the opposite, and never would have considered posting it up, even though I think it is visually interesting.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, thank you @NotAHope@mastodon.social for sharing with us such a great concept, allowing us all to relax a little, helping us realize that maybe things that we are critical of aren't all that bad, and to allow imperfect things to shine.

This photo is a picture of a film negative that I took when I got a new extension tube, and this is a calibration shot when I was trying to get the backlight, zoom, and focus set correctly. It obviously needed quite a bit of adjustment for all of the above!

Once I develop my negatives at home, I capture a photo of them with the digital camera, invert the photos, and apply some minor corrections to get the final image. I have some equipment at home to do print negatives that I'm looking forward to setting up and using on these negatives one day, but that's a whole other time/effort/money thing...!

In the centre of the tube is the film negative. It is overexposed and out of focus. Above and below the negative are the two bars which usually contain information and barcodes. These are also out of focus, but you can barely make out what appears to be a barcode in the lower bar. The image in the negative is not particularly distinguishable, there are dark details in the upper left corner, some vertical bars in the centre, and a few other patchy areas but nothing particularly noteworthy.

Another walk on the Yarra River Trail today brings some fluffy new family members to the area. Here we have some Australian Wood Ducklings foraging through the grassy riverbank, with (I believe, based on the feathering) mumma in the background.

Passers by were happily observing and quietly snapping shots of the family of at least 8 ducklings plus the two parents. Aside from a small Mynah close by that was flying about and being a bit of a nuisance, the ducks and ducklings where largely unbothered by their celebrity status and were much more interested in what they could find on the ground.

A photo of two ducklings and in the foreground and a duck in the background foraging on a grassy hillside. One of the ducklings on the right is in focus, and the other to the left is slightly blurred. They are covered in down rather than feathers, and their bellies and lower face are white and their backs and head are a mocha brown, and they have a white stripe below and above their eyes. One duckling appears to have its tongue poking out with a little bit of plant material in its mouth. The ground cover is mostly green grass and clover. The duck in the back is likely the mother based on the patterns and colouring, with a dark brown head with white stripes across the eye, and mottled white-and-brown belly feathers with plain duller-brown back feathers.

On the way to Warburton the other week we stopped over at a small café in Mount Evelyn for a late breakfast, and on the wall they had a spectacular arrangement of dried leaves and flowers. I ducked back out to the car to grab the camera and snap a few shots of it, and I hope I've done it justice, because it really was gorgeous.

I didn't catch the name of the shop at the time, but looking back at the map, I think that it was probably Hometown Espresso. Their food and drinks were very tasty.

A photograph of an arrangement of flowers, leaves, and other plant materials that have been dried and preserved. The arrangement includes straw-like materials along the bottom which are pale yellow in colour and arranged such that the fibres run mostly horizontally; just below are some slightly more reddish-orange leaves that are quite small and terminate in clusters like fingers. Above the straw are some even paler leaves - some of the leaves have some dark marks on them that almost appear to be like seeds or some other kind of imperfection embedded into the leaf. The layer above is some kind of very light pastel purple flower that resembles "baby's breath" in its shape, but is probably smaller, packed more densely, and is flowing downwards like a waterfall. At the top of the arrangement are flowers with white petals and a yellow-orange centre.

We're just about to enter spring here, but the nasturtium don't really care because they have been flowering strong all winter. Here's a macro from this afternoon showcasing one of their colourful displays.

A macro photograph of a nasturtium flower. It is hard to distinguish specific features, however there are elements of the flower visible including petals and other flower parts. On some of the visible petals, there are vibrant contrasting reds and yellows, with the reds emanating from the tip of the petal and fanning out towards the edges of the petal like individual spines, as well as a red splotch of colour like an ink blot at the top section of the petal. The rest of the photo is mostly out-of-focus elements including areas that are highly exposed with sunlight causing bloom and lens flare, giving the photo something of a "dream sequence" effect.
