Zum heute eine Schwebfliege (Familie Syrphidae) auf den Blüten der kanadischen Goldrute. Wahrscheinlich ist es eine Wollschwebfliege (Volucella). Ihr Aussehen ist typische Mimikry - sie ahmt eine wehrhafte Biene oder Wespe nach.

The local oak trees have been dropping acorns for the last week or so, and as a result many of the birds aren’t quite as interested in my feeders. The blue jays especially—why go for peanuts when acorns are everywhere? Acorns seem to be their absolute favorite.

Here’s a picture from a while back, taken during one of those times when the blue jays were stocking up on peanuts instead.

"A blue jay—Cyanocitta cristata—stands boldly on a wooden rail, its posture full of confidence and mischief. Its feathers shimmer in layered shades of electric blue, soft gray, and crisp white, each one lying neatly against the next like carefully arranged tiles. The black markings around its face form a sharp, mask‑like pattern that gives the bird an alert, almost cunning expression. Clamped in its beak are two whole peanuts, held crosswise with surprising precision. The jay’s beak is slightly parted, just enough to show how it has maneuvered both peanuts into place. You can almost imagine the quick, clever movements it used to gather them—one snatched, then the second tucked in like a prize. The background fades into a soft blur of muted greens and browns, making the bird stand out as the undeniable star of the moment. Its eyes gleam with that familiar blue jay intensity, a look that says it knows exactly what it’s doing—and that it’s quite pleased with itself. The scene feels live
