I was thinking about those patterns, how their formation is encoded into DNA somehow, and whether they are random. Also, are they a way of establishing bilateral symmetry by creating a curve and taking its 2nd or 3rd derivatives to figure out the plane of symmetry ?

IIRC, Turing was working on such math toward the end of his career. Before he was murdered for being gay...but that's another story....
