Safe in the Silent Garden.

Lobethal Cemetery, Lobethal, South Australia.

Lobethal General Cemetery was established on 26 October 1886 on Crown Land Section 5162 in the Hundred of Onkaparinga. Its creation followed the closure of two earlier cemeteries near Lobethalโ€™s Lutheran churches, which were deemed too close to domestic water sources by the South Australian Board of Health. The new site, located about two miles from town, was chosen to ensure sanitary burial practices.

Today, Lobethal Cemetery holds nearly 2,000 memorials and remains a quiet testament to the regionโ€™s settler history, faith, and resilience.

A black and white photograph highlighting a central marble headstone shaped like a cross with the carved words "Safe in the arms of Jesus". It stands within a low walled plot, surrounded by a lawn. In the background, other monuments, including a Celtic style cross, sit out of focus beneath large evergreen trees. Bright daylight highlights the white marble against the darker foliage background.
