I was just thinking about metadata, and it occurred to me that a big part of the problem with "ownership" of your online is that data is routinely stripped from files upon upload to social media.

I thought Mastodon would be different, so I downloaded one of my recent photos from here and checked. Sadly, no.

This seems like a huge oversight. I understand some people will want this for privacy's sake, but it should be something that could be enabled per account, surely?

Here's the EXIF data from the file on my hard drive, pre-upload, rightly identifying myself as the "artist". And here's the EXIF data from the exact same file after it had passed through Mastodon.social's servers, now missing the Artist and Copyright tags.

This is highly unsatisfactory.

@coldkennels@mastodon.social I agree. There were huge scandals many years ago with location data enabled by default allowing thieves to work out when owners weren't home, etc. So everyone started stripping it out, which is better. Except, as tech and SM skills have moved on, giving photographers the ability to set their own default, and also vary it on a case by case basis, seems like a no brainer to me.

@coldkennels@mastodon.social it wouldnt solve anything in that respect though because if you uploaded an image I could just strip the exif myself
