Great advice from @ewen@social.ewenbell.com ... reminds me of what I have told people shopping for their first guitar: if you're fired up about the instrument, you're more likely to pick it up when you walk past it in your living room, so don't worry about the brand, get the one that you think looks cool. They're all pretty good!

I've known folk who've bought DSLRs to learn that they would really prefer to use their phone camera, and those cameras are getting really good. If you have a friend who as gear, ask to borrow it to try it out. If there is a camera rental near you, rent first...
