Arabs & Jews

Photographer Helmar Lerski (1871–1956) was born Israel Schmuklerski in Strasbourg but was raised in Zurich.

In 1932 he moved to Palestine + began his series Arabs & Jews. The project was a response to the instrumentalization of photography by Nazi ideology. Lerski attempted to remove his subjects from any context by simply focusing on their faces. The book was never published.
