@grickle@mstdn.social I was just recently listening to a talk by Onçafari about their efforts to rewild jaguars. Their first attempt was a real life example of this cartoon. They couldn't understand why the two young cats they were working with made zero attempt to hunt the live animals they put in their enclosure. It finally dawned on them that they maybe shouldn't feed them at all. After a week of withholding food, which felt terribly cruel to the humans, the jaguars immediately attempted to kill the introduced animal. While it was a clumsy attempt, they did manage to kill and eat it, and with the new "no food you didn't kill" schedule soon learned to hunt efficiently, and were eventually able to be released successfully.
