Sunny weather made for good photos of the castle exterior, even mid-renovation.

Schloss Gadebusch 🏰

The Renaissance castle was built between 1571 and 1573 under Christoph von Mecklenburg on the site of an earlier medieval fortress.

Its facade is decorated with terracotta reliefs created in the Lübeck workshop of Statius von Düren.

The building is considered a rare example of Mecklenburg brick Renaissance architecture in the regional Johann-Albrecht style.

Since 2017 it has been owned by the town of Gadebusch and is undergoing comprehensive restoration as part of the "Zukunftsschloss" project.

The interior is currently closed to visitors, though guided tours are offered on select occasions such as Open Monument Day.

Marktplatz und Stadtkirche Gadebusch ⛪

The market square forms the historic centre of Gadebusch, framed by the town hall and surrounding old houses.

A bronze fountain figure, the Münzschläger, was unveiled at the town hall in 2011 and depicts a coin-minter at work.

The statue recalls Gadebusch's history as a ducal mint town, a tradition still marked by an annual coin-themed festival.

Nearby stands the Stadtkirche St. Jakobus und St. Dionysius, begun around 1200 and among the oldest brick churches in northwestern Mecklenburg.

The church has been listed as a monument of national significance since 2005.
