The word 'bench' is very, very old. It's derived from Proto-Indo-European, and variations exist in most European languages. It's where judges sit, where moneylenders sat (before they opened their banks), and where your reserve players sit, waiting to join the game. I like to think of today as the August Bench Holiday...

I'm pleased with it.
It is level, which of course a benchmark, Ordnance Survey or otherwise, should be and sets.
