Fir trees, some with lichen hanging from their branches, stand on the edge of a rocky shoreline as the tide goes down. The calm sea looks dark green because of the reflection of the coastal forest. A very long skinny log barely visible floats on the surface of the water. It almost looks like a ripple. On the log rests an old brown greyish seal. I have seen this seal many times over the years in that isolated cove on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is an old one and it has lost sight in one eye but it is living a quiet life there, something that we all aspire to.
