A Tragic Fall on the Cliffs of Morgan.

Morgan Cemetery has its origins in the late 19th century river trade era, and its early history is unusually dramatic. The cemetery was established in 1889, later coming under council control.

One of the most well known stories is the identity of the cemetery’s first interment:

A Royal Navy surveyor named Harvey reportedly speculated while helping prepare the cemetery grounds about who would be the first person buried there.

The next day, he drowned in the Murray River and became the cemetery’s first burial, a story long repeated in local heritage accounts.
