Finistère has more crosses per square mile than seems entirely necessary, and many of them are ornate (and occasionally rather grotesque) calvary crosses, like this one. We cycled 48 miles yesterday, and passed through several towns and villages. We saw a shed load of crosses en route, I can tell you. 😊

I cycled last week in Alsace, on the opposite side of France, and they too had a plethora of stone crucifixes. A guide had suggested that the appearance of skulls on the crucifix may have indicated the presence of plague in that locale.

@RickGaehl@mstdn.social The church spires are also rather grim, spiky, and jagged. #Obelix delivered some rather nice rocks though.
