@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place I won't try to sit on my laptop. These computer had a very good design.

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place this is what I hope I look like using a Computer.

Nothing says “compact” better than “100 square feet of floor space” 🙃

Screenshot from a promo brochure of the time reading:

The elegant and compact CRAY X-MP mainframe consists of 12 vertical columns arranged in a 270° arc; each column houses chassis holding up to 72 modules. Power supplies and cooling are clustered around the base and extend outward to provide seating for maintenance personnel.

Physical Characteristics of the CRAY X-MP Mainframe
• 100 square feet of floor space for mainframe
• 5.25 tons mainframe weight
• 9.5 nanosecond clock period
• Liquid refrigerant cooling
• 400 Hz power from motor generators

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place In that picture with the guy typing at a terminal it almost looks like a row of hard drives along the wall.

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place Not to mention they would sometimes reboot due to flash photography.

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place I love how they come in designer colours as well. Very 70s!

Those CRT monitors are an aesthetic too (in photo 3).

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place Cray supercomputers were by far the most beautiful. But others—such as the minicomputers of the 70s—also had great designs.

Couldn't help myself from making this T shirt design just now 😅

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place I had to reboot this one in Mass Effect 1!

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place gosh I haven’t been in a ‘computer lab’ in years and those are beautiful computer labs

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place I remember when the local university got their Cray X-MP my friends and I made a special trip to see it. Looked a lot like the photos. Later the decommissioned Cray was set up in the lobby of the supercomputer facility like a sculpture. Might still be there.

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place @i0null@infosec.exchange the best part of the movie Sneakers was when they casually went and sat on the Cray, with no context given for the average person.

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place Thanks for those photos. I used to port software to various different Crays in another life. We had a round one with the bench at Shell. An XMP/EA-64. Most of the Crays I used were remove via telnet so I never got to see what they looked like.

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place when the machines looked more fashionate than the people operating them ...

@PixelProphecy@mastodon.gamedev.place

I always imagined them being tall towers of things...illusion ruined...

I read that at one time, Honda used a Cray for their F1 engine. Radio link from car to pit, satellite link from pit to Cray, all so they could run the engine just below melting point of the engine block.

If anyone has more on this Id love to hear about it.
