History’s gateway.

Porta San Giacomo, one of the iconic Venetian-era gates to the Città Alta in Bergamo.

A powerful black and white, low-angle photograph of the Porta San Giacomo city gate in Bergamo. The massive white marble structure dominates the frame, featuring a large central archway for pedestrians and vehicles. Four imposing fluted columns rise dramatically on either side of the arch, supporting a triangular pediment with a carved Lion of St. Mark at its center. Two small decorative obelisk-like spires top the gate. In the foreground is a worn cobblestone bridge and approach. The lighting is harsh and directional, casting deep shadows within the archway and highlighting the texture of the stone against a dark, dramatic sky. The gate is built into the city walls, with older brickwork visible on the left.

Venice far from home.

Marble sentinels at the north entrance of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. Thinking about the deep history and connection between Bergamo and Venice as the end of summer approaches.


A striking black and white photo, taken at a low angle, of the north entrance of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, Italy. A detailed, multi-layered Gothic archway with a carved wooden door is the central focus, supported by columns. Leading up to and across the entrance is a stark, black-and-white checkered stone pavement. Two detailed, roaring marble lions, typical of Venetian iconography, are positioned on either side of the entrance, guarding the threshold. The ground outside the checkered path is a traditional cobblestone pavement. In the background, other historic stone structures are visible under a clear, bright sky. The lighting is harsh and direct, creating strong shadows and highlights.
