Today in Labor History September 5, 1936: Photographer Robert Capa captured the death of 24-year-old anarchist Federico "Taino" Borrell in the iconic photo The Falling Soldier. Borell was an antifascist fighter, killed during the Spanish Civil War. Capa is considered by many to be the greatest war photojournalist ever. He was the only civilian photographer who landed on Omaha Beach during D-Day. He co-founded Magnum Photojournalism collective, which included David "Chim" Seymour, Maria Eisner, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, William Vandivert, and Rita Vandivert. He died after stepping on a landmine in Vietnam in 1954.

The name Robert Capa was originally the pseudonym shared by Gerda Taro and her lover Endre Ernő Friedmann, both photographers and Jewish exiles living in France in the 1930s. Scholar Hanno Hardt described their work as such: "Taro and Capa helped invent the genre of modern war photography while fueling the vicarious experience of the spectator by offering an approximation of life in the conflict zone." Taro was killed in 1937 while covering the Spanish Civil War. She was only 26. After her death, Friedmann continued to go by the name of Robert Capa.

The US government has destroyed my online presence (email & website). No I'm not joking. I had my whole website emilyartist.ca hosted on Autistici/Inventati Noblogs platform, as well as my email. On Aug. 28, the US government declared Autistici/Inventati a terrorist organization due to their stated antifascist ethics. They're a tiny Italian volunteer-run web server that only supports people working for kindness, justice, and peace.
Now I have to rebuild.
