Tour de Poland 🇵🇱: Gdańsk - Deň 4.

Gdańsk je po Poznańi druhé veľmi pekné, historické, a zároveň moderné mesto (resp. oba sú na prvom mieste). Je tu ale podstatne viac ľudí ako v Poznańi, hoci je Gdańsk samo o sebe o trochu menšie mesto. Ak ale beriem do úvahy metropolitnú oblasť, tak Gdańsk je výrazne väčší. Taktiež je tu ale aj veľa turistov, najmä Nemcov, počul som ale aj Čechov a Slovákov.

Že tu je taktiež hustá sieť cyklotrás ani nehovorím, to už je samozrejmosť. Taktiež odporúčam toto navštíviť.

The New Motława River, Gdańsk, Poland

The New Motława River in Gdańsk was created in 1576 by digging a watercourse that connected the Bersen Sandbank with two closed ponds, creating a new navigable branch of the Motława River. Initially, it served as a defensive moat protecting Gdańsk’s granaries, which were a key element of the city’s economic development. In 1599, the New Motława River was widened and deepened to allow for free commercial navigation and expand Gdańsk’s port capacity, which became one of the most important trading centers on the Baltic Sea.

The New Motława separates Granary Island from Ołowianka, Długie Ogrody, and the Lower Town, creating a unique urban space. The water level was regulated by the Stone Lock, built between 1619 and 1623, which protected the city from floods and controlled water flow.

After World War II, the New Motława River fell into oblivion. However, in 1997, to celebrate the city’s 1,000th anniversary, a marina was built here, revitalizing this section of the Gdańsk waterfront. Today, the New Motława is a picturesque place for strolls and a symbol of the rich history of the port city of Gdańsk.

Monument to the Defenders of the Coast, Westerplatte, Poland

On September 1, 1939, at 4:47 a.m., the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein began shelling the Military Transit Depot at Westerplatte, a strategic military outpost on a peninsula at the entrance to the port of the Free City of Danzig. The Germans expected a quick capture of the outpost, possessing a decisive advantage: over 3,000 soldiers, 65 cannons, over 100 machine guns, and nearly 50 aircraft. Consequently, the Polish crew, numbering 182-225 trained soldiers according to various sources, was expected to withstand the attack for approximately six hours until reinforcements arrived.

The resistance of the Polish defenders proved much stronger than anticipated. Despite bombardment, artillery fire, and mortar fire, the garrison, under the command of Major Henryk Sucharski, managed to repel the attacks, utilizing numerous defensive positions and prepared bunkers. Despite constant air raids and shelling, the soldiers maintained high morale and determination. The fighting ended only on September 7th, when surrender became inevitable due to exhaustion of men, ammunition, and supplies.

The defense of Westerplatte became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and sovereignty, and its story is forever etched in Polish national memory as an example of courage and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming enemy odds.

The monument, unveiled on October 9, 1966, is one of the most important symbols of Polish history and the memory of the heroic defense of Westerplatte in September 1939.
