Roll 19717318: Riverside (1970)

This set was hard for me to process. Pam Tilley (shown here) and Mio Amrine were residents of the unit above us and our closest friends. They went for a summer trip to France and were killed in a car crash. I had already learned that caregivers could suddenly disappear, and now I found out that dear friends could, too. I never really got over this.

One: For some reason that I can't now imagine, Melanie and I are visiting the owner (I guess) of a Chevy Fleetmaster very similar to my 1948 model (the one in back). I think that his is earlier, maybe 1946 or 1947. Models in those years changed very little, and tended to resemble the cars made just before the war (in this case, the 1941 Chevrolet Deluxe).

Three characters.

One: A clerk in a record store. It's hard to describe the importance that LPs had for us. They were expensive ($3-4 apiece, which would be $30-40 now), and they were all we had (aside from radio) for music. We played them all day. Choosing the albums (which is what we called them, not "LPs") took a lot of thought, and the visit to the store was a big deal.

Melanie refuels an old VW beetle (our ride at the time). No filler tube, you just poured directly into the tank. Self-serve was a brand new thing; up till this point, all pumping was done by service station attendants.

VWs of this vintage amusingly lacked fuel gauges. When the gas ran out, you flipped a lever on the floor that switched to an extra gallon so that you could get to a gas station.
