Melanie refuels an old VW beetle (our ride at the time). No filler tube, you just poured directly into the tank. Self-serve was a brand new thing; up till this point, all pumping was done by service station attendants.
VWs of this vintage amusingly lacked fuel gauges. When the gas ran out, you flipped a lever on the floor that switched to an extra gallon so that you could get to a gas station.

@bosak@flx.masto.host The so-called emergency gas tank. IIRC it was just turning the feed tube in order to reach the bottom of the tank. And you had to remember to turn it back when filling, or you might end up siphoning out the gas while you were at the pump.
