A few evening smash & grabs, meaning fairly poor pictures taken quickly and/or from a distance 🤷‍♂️

First is a female yellow-haired sun fly (Myathropa florea). The distinctive thorax markings give it its 🇩🇪 name, Totenkopfschwebfliege, although I also like the English alternative, Batman hoverfly 🦇🙂

A large hoverfly seen from behind on an ivy flower. The fly has large dark brown compound eyes and a black and yellow banded abdomen. The wings are clear with touches of amber near the roots. The thorax is distinctive, showing a base of white and two black lateral bands. The lower band has the classic Batman logo shape and combined the white and black resembles a deaths head (sort of). The same fly seen more from behind, showing more details of the black and yellow banded abdomen, but also again the Batman logo shape black band on the thorax.

Second, a wood cockroach (genus Ectobius) seen from a slightly unusual perspective – usually they're seen scuttling across the ground & photographed from above.

As for the species, always hard to tell – probably E vittiventris based on a fuzzy overhead shot, but maybe E pallidus or E lapponicus.

A wood cockroach seen side on running along a sweet pea pod. The arch of the amber head, with its sculpted black compound eyes, to the brown thorax and wing covers is well seen. The brown spiny legs and the light brown, dark brown, and black sternites on the underside of the abdomen are also clear, along with one of the cerci.
