Another hot & windy day. A few arthropods emerged in the evening, albeit no new species.

First, the eternally-cute woodland jumping spider (Evarcha falcata; 🇩🇪 Bunter Sichelspringer).

I also saw a huge robber fly on the same rose branch, but the noise of the camera turning on scared it off before I got a shot 🙄

Then an insect I haven't seen for a couple of months – a scorpion fly, genus Panorpa.

It's a female & thus lacks the large curled genitals at the end of the abdomen that males have, & which can be used to ID the species.

In the absence of that, the wing markings suggest P. germanica, just possibly P. communis.

A colourful fly sitting near the edge of a tattered green leaf, seen from above and behind. The fly has a brown head, with yellow at the base of its long black antennae. The thorax and abdomen are banded black and yellow, before turning mahogany for the last few segments of the abdomen. There is a small black Y-shape at the end. The wings are clear with strong black patches.

The same fly seen from the side, showing that the underside of the abdomen is yellow, apart from the last mahogany segments, the area where the legs attach is grey, and that the fly has a long brown drooping snout. The legs are grey-brown.

@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social your new and old camera definitely handle colour differently as set-up. Have you noticed? Older was less saturated yet more convincing.
