This iconic black-and-white photograph of young dancers on a windowsill was taken in 1936 by the legendary photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. It shows two ballerinas in tutus during a break at the School of American Ballet in New York, an institution co-founded by choreographer George Balanchine. The work is part of the historic photo archive of *LIFE* magazine.
