@wood5y@mastodonapp.uk You know another thing that is probably true (I don’t have data): the minimum requirements for running #LibreOffice are probably going DOWN. If not going down, I’m sure they’re staying pretty stable. When you don’t add all that extra garbage, you don’t drive the obsolescence cycle.

I'm fed up with Word and the tendency for docs to disappear after updating it at Micro Soft's suggestion.
So I downloaded Libre Office but I couldn't get it to open.

But it's also sad that you now have to specify it.
Imagine if you went to your favourite restaurant and the waiter proudly tells you that no human semen is used as ingredient in their kitchen. It's great that is that way but sad that you have to point it out

What's strange is not just how people have been conditioned and funnelled into using MS Word, but the reliance on word processors in the first place.
For me they fall between two stools:
simple document -> text editor
complex document -> LaTeX
I only ever use Libre Office […looks up name from start menu dropdown…] Writer if someone sends me a Word document.
For spreadsheets it's almost always gnumeric. For drawings I have Inkscape and Dia. Bitmaps it's GIMP.
Don't need MS at all

@wood5y@mastodonapp.uk I don't know if that's technically true, since they added LanguageTool as a remote language checker, and while it's optional, it does require network access to function, doesn't it? (Also, it would transfer document contents to remote services.)
