I've stumbled across an interesting article today which focuses on the concept of 'Engineering Theatre' - which could be basically summarised as what happens when you pretend you're doing something without actually doing anything.
The writer tries to trace it back to some kind of AI-sloppery but anyone who's old enough and had the "pleasure" of working in certain "big" environments - especially in the public sector - may actually find a lot of common ground.
So maybe the problem is not intelligence (real or artificial, it doesn't matter) them, but just some sane understanding of what are the purpose and the value of our work to ourselves and to others.
Are you just being paid to keep yourself busy the whole day, or are you actually trying to achieve something?
I know, I know, I can already hear the chorus of people complaining that by performing too much you're actually just making the company fatter instead of proving your value. I get that, fair observation, but maybe in the end the real point is that if the company is only getting empty work, then it's perfectly logical from its point of view to get it somewhere else, from something that doesn't sleep, works 7 days a week, doesn't complain and never strikes.
So, less engineering theatre, more (useful) work.
