Black-and-white nature photograph focused on a fragment of a birch tree. Its trunk occupies the central part of the frame and leans slightly on a diagonal. The pale, almost white bark is cracked, rough and marked by dark grooves, creating a strong, almost graphic texture. A thin branch with a few leaves grows from the trunk, while a single leaf on the right draws attention with its delicacy against the rugged surface of the bark.
The rest of the forest is heavily blurred. The vertical silhouettes of the trees dissolve into light and dark bands, becoming more a rhythm of light and shadow than a clearly defined landscape. The shallow depth of field separates the birch from its surroundings and gives this single tree an individual presence among the anonymous multitude of trunks.
