Seasons change.

The ravine in late October and mid November, Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden, Connecticut. October 27, 2022 and November 15, 2024.

We are climbing up a dry ravine between rather steep rocky slopes on our left and right. The ravine slopes upward ahead of us, but a bit less steeply. The floor and sides of the ravine are covered with many rocks and boulders, numerous freshly fallen golden leaves, also fallen tree branches and tree trunks. There are very few trees growing along the floor of the ravine and the bottom portions of its steep sides, but a thick forest covers the higher slopes and the head of the ravine in front of us. The trees are sporting mostly bright gold foliage with a sprinkling of orange leaves. The cloudless sky seen through the forest ahead of us is an intense light blue. The sunlight is shining towards us through the golden leaves, backlighting the rocks and tree trunks. A deep blue sky with diaphanous swirls of haze. Climbing a narrow ravine with walls that slope upward at about a 45-degree angle to our right and left. A forest of mature hardwoods towers above us. The midday sun is directly ahead, shining through a forest of near-leafless hardwoods, silhouetting the tree trunks and limbs while backlighting the few remaining reddish brown leaves, as well as the vivid greens of a handful of pines and cedars on the ridge to our left. The floor of the ravine is a jumble of gray rocks and boulders, fallen branches and freshly fallen leaves. A sprinkling of bright green ferns and small leafy shoots linger into the very end of the growing season.
