Thought I would play the old Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my Switch1, but I first have to deal with biblical levels of greed from Nintendo.

This is my 4th year of paying €40 for Nintendo Online, just for this game. That's €160. For reference, the game as a cartridge cost about €71 originally 😐
Ugh the subscription economy sucks.
(And yes I finish like 1 temple a year)
@Gina@fosstodon.org It sucks that you had to spend 40 euro for this, but this is one hell of a shot/chaser post combo
I can't wait for this to scar a whole new generation 🤣
@Gina@fosstodon.org I hope they don't go soft on the enemy design of this temple, and they better keep the dark atmosphere too hehe
@Gina@fosstodon.org scared to do the math on what we’ve forked out in subs since buying kiddo a Xbox several years ago
@Gina@fosstodon.org I got hit with a renewal today, and just realized I'm demonstrating one of many dark patterns of these subscriptions.
Previously, I had the US $20 one (the bare minimum one for online), which is enough of an insult, but somehow upgraded it and then forgot I did that, so I thought N had hiked the price to $50 when the renewal went through.
@yakkoj@fosstodon.org oof, that sucks. At least here they don't do automatic renewal unless you specifically select it.
@Gina@fosstodon.org the way to play Ocarina of Time is:
https://www.shipofharkinian.com/
Or the 3DS port like me muahaha
@Gina@fosstodon.org it's the game fully ported (revere engineered) to PC with full camera controls and plenty of quality of life features and control options :3
I do pay the Nintendo online service just for Mario Party 3 with friends tho LOL
@Gina@fosstodon.org As the pages shows you are getting 365 days, will you have to pay extra in leap years?
@Gina@fosstodon.org yeah subscriptions are pretty terrible, especially compared to the old virtual console model where you could buy individual retro games.
But hey I guess you could look to emulate or run recomp? Or find the 3DS version?
@Gina@fosstodon.org Absolutely unrelated, there are switch homebrew emulators for basically every console in existence.

They really are the Disney of video games, both in a "big part of my childhood" and "greedy, paranoid, control freaks" sorts of ways.
(I'm fortunate(?) that my age and circumstances allowed me to skip directly from Atari 2600 to "computer I can program!!!!!" and miss Nintendo entirely.)
