Then several flies feeding on the ivy:

A common drone fly (Eristalis tenax; 🇩🇪 Mistbiene [not as pretty as it sounds]), which are frequently seen in my garden, & a male face fly (Musca autumnalis; 🇩🇪 Herbstfliege), quickly & poorly grabbed with the wrong camera settings before it flew off 🙈

A large drone fly seen side-on on an green ivy flower. The fly has a white face, black compound eyes, and hairs all over its head. The thorax is likewise very golden hairy over a dark bronze. The abdomen is black and gold, tapering towards the end, with many fine white hairs. The legs are dark, albeit with golden hairs on the hind femora and tibia – this is a marker for E tenax relative to most of the other Eristalis species. A shaky picture of a small fly seen from above on closed yellow-green ivy flowers. The fly has red compound eyes close together, marking it as male. The thorax is black with longitudinal grey stripes and black bristles. The wings are clear with hints of amber towards the base. The abdomen is black and yellow, with a black stripe running towards the tip which is black and white with relatively small black bristles.

And resting briefly on the ivy between feeds, this is a female orange-belted leafwalker (Xylota segnis; 🇩🇪 Gemeine Langbauchschwebfliege).

Quite common apparently, but it's the first I've seen, & unfortunately poorly photographed, as it was some way from me & quickly flew off 🤷‍♂️

A long, stocky fly resting on a pale green ivy leaf, seen from above and in half profile. The fly has a white face with widely separated dark red compound eyes and black antennae. The thorax is a very dark shiny bronze, while the abdomen, seen through the folded dark clear amber wings, is red along most of its length, with a narrow black band and short V-spike at the top, and a wider black band at the tip. The legs have dark femora, the hind ones quite chunky. The tibia are yellow on the fore and mid-legs, half yellow and black on the hind, with yellow tarsi and black feet. The same fly seen from in front and above showing a few more details in the face and showing the colours of the front two pairs of legs nicely. Some dusting and hairs are seen on the dark bronze thorax. Another shot from the same perspective, but focussed further back, showing the details of the wings in more detail, as well as a bit more of the red-orange abdomen beneath. The hind legs are a bit more splayed, showing their chunky black femora. A more head-on shot showing the face in decent detail, even though fully sharp. Again, the colours of the front two pairs of legs are seen well, along with the heavy black femora of the hind legs, with spines on their undersides.
