"Halfway House" woods. A 300yr old beech wood at a lonely ruined moorland drovers inn on a N-bound turnpike/drove route in Northumberland. The wood was shelter for the cattle. As usual there has been no regeneration. Recently the land has been left ungrazed all summer and seedling trees appear, then the owner sticks cattle on for winter grazing and they all disappear.
