Bloody Yanks, coming over here, sucking our sap ... 🙄

This is a rhododendron leafhopper (Graphocephala fennahi; 🇩🇪 Rhododendron-Zikade).

Native to the eastern US, it arrived on plants in the UK in the 30s & Europe in the 70s.

Ironically, it lives in fear of the harlequin ladybird, another invader.

A small leafhopper seen in half-profile, standing on the windscreen of my car, reflected several times in the multi-layer glass. The lower half of the leafhopper is yellow, including the legs, the latter with spines. Separated by a horizontal black stripe at the level of the eyes, the top half of the head and the wings are a lurid mix of green, orange, and red stripes, with black at the tip.

I photographed this from a distance on my car windscreen with the 24-200mm zoom lens on my Nikon Z6iii.

I took that to the front door today to try & catch more of the many, many flies, wasps, & bees feeding from the ivy – it's a couple of metres across a deep "crevasse" (our house is built into the side of a hill), & so is not directly accessible.

I did see some interesting & perhaps new (?) species, but have failed so far to get a decent ID for any of them 🙄

@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social After 50 years they have the full visa rights to drink!

@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social da ich keine Rhododendren besitze und auch kein Rhododrendon bin - darf ich dieses Tierchen super knuffig finden.

@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social I hate these kind of cicadas… a real pest. They also like my walnut tree leaves and sunflowers very much. No harlequin ladybirds spotted yet, but what predator likes those?
