'Plimsoll Line'


The load line mark, also known as Plimsoll line, indicates the legal limit to which a ship may be loaded for specific water types and temperatures in order to safely maintain buoyancy. What the Markings Mean: The Circle with a Horizontal Line (Plimsoll Disk): The center of the circle marks the maximum summer load line in saltwater. Letters (LR or similar): The letters on either side of the circle (like "R" and "D" here, often standing for the certifying classification society like Lloyd's Register) show the authority that surveyed the ship. Lines to the Right: These stacked horizontal and vertical lines indicate different permitted load limits for varying water densities and weather conditions (such as fresh water or winter salt water). Numbers on the Left: These are draft marks showing the depth of the ship's keel below the water surface in feet or decimeters.

The black and white analog photograph shows a general view of the Benedictine Abbey of Sant Miquel de Cuixà, surrounded by trees, as seen from the adjacent countryside. The bell tower, a beautiful example of a Lombard-style Romanesque tower, stands out in the image. It consists of four floors that rise on a large late sloping base. The openings are distributed along the four levels: the first and second floors have two simple semi-circular arch windows on each side; on the third and fourth, also on each facade, there is a pair of twin semi-circular arch windows, separated by a column with a smooth capital and, finally, above the windows of the last floor there are small portholes.
