A dipper bird perched facing left on a mossy rock among relatively still river water. The bird has a brown body, with fluffy grey feathers at its side, white chest and tummy, and thin pointed grey beak. A racing pigeon seen face on, head tilted looking straight at the camera, against a clear blue sky. The bird has a grey body, purple and green neck, and orange eyes. It also had plastic racing pigeon rings. A male kingfisher perched by a river facing left on a fallen dead giant hogweed stem with green leaves behind. The bird has a bright orange body, vibrant blue back and head with white feathery flecks, and long pointed grey beak. A grey heron seen mid body up, perched facing right on a damaged tree above a river with white sky behind and green stems in front of it. The bird has the typical grey hooded cloak, black shoulder markings, grey head, neck and chest, black head top, and pointed orange beak.

Some from my husband’s Saturday walk to the Dighty Burn wooded river valley near our home in eastern , .

A buzzard standing eating lunch in a wheat or corn field with swathes of cut crops running horizontally across the field in waves. The bird stands with its head erect, facing right. Though glimpsed from afar, we can still see its dark and light brown colouring, and its yellow beak. A female house sparrow stretched out reaching horizontally, left to right as we look, feeding from long stems of red dock seeds. Behind and below her to the left can be glimpsed the head of another sparrow. There were about 25 there then. A common carder bumblebee resting on a dogwood leaf. The bee is very fluffy, a mix of cream, brown and a mustardy orange. Its long multi part black legs are very visible, ringing around it on the green leaf. Part of an old railway viaduct glimpsed between tall green trees left and right with blue sky behind the railings at the top of the viaduct which is now a walking route.

A grey heron perched at right, facing the left, on a curving light brown branch with green leaves behind. High above a river. A small long-tailed tit perched mid picture, facing left, on a diagonal stem of a dead giant hogweed plant. The bird has a soft grey tummy and mainly black elsewhere. Two long-tailed tits dangling feeding from a spiky rosebay willowherb. The birds are very close, and in the picture it looks almost as though one tail was touching the other bird. A grey squirrel looking towards us, partially hidden behind the hawthorn plant it was feeding on the red berries among green leaves. The squirrel is a somewhat reddish colour with a fluffy white tummy.

A female red-sided eriothrix (tachnid) fly perched to the right of a pink spiky thistle. The fly has an orange and black body, and white and purple head, with brown wings. A speckled wood butterfly seen from behind perched on a green leaf among green stems, leaves and fruit. The butterfly has white spotted brown wings. A roe deer walking to the left behind green trees beyond a cornfield. It has soft orange brown fur and no visible horns. A female common merganser /goosander swimming to left on green water which is very still and reflects her body in the water. Only her orange legs under the water aren’t matched above. She has a soft grey body with a darker back, white chest, orange tufty head, and red beak.

A dipper bird perched mid lower left on a reddish round rock looking up towards swirling green, white and brown water. A willow warbler perched facing right among brown stems and green leaves with blue sky behind. The bird has soft green front and darker green head and back, plus a yellow stripe above its eye. A common toad - probably young - perched on a tree branch in mud with green stubby plants nearby. The toad is dark brown with mottled white spots. A grey heron perched on a broken tree among green leafy plants and trees. It faces right, with a grey cloak, black further down towards its legs and also shoulders.

A common flower fly (hover fly) perched on a shiny green leaf. The insect has a stripy black and yellow body, shiny brown/gold area above that, then brown/red eyes. Its wings are see through. A falcon seen from below, wings spread wide against blue sky. We think it is a kestrel, with black markings around and below its eyes, and a black band running across the tip of its tail feathers. A curious bushy yellow, green and red fluffy spherical growth on a green stem with green leaves around. We think it’s a wild rose. A green veined white butterfly perched on a green leafy plant. It has green veins under its white wings and brown veins on the upper wings as more visible here.

A dipper bird perched mid left on a small rock in the middle of a swirling river. The bird is mostly dark brown apart from its white neck and chest. A chiffchaff taking off left/away from us against a blue sky with green branches to the right. Its wings are spread out wide, with its right wing’s inner fan of slate grey feathers especially visible in this picture. A fledgling wood pigeon standing facing left on rough ground with fallen brown leaves around. The bird is still developing, and has a mix of more full feather areas and much barer patches. It looks closer to a dinosaur than adult wood pigeons do. A group of rooks perched near each other in a leafy tree with white sky behind. At top right one bird flies with wings spread.
