A common gull standing facing left on a sandy beach among seaweed covered stones. The bird has soft white and grey plumage, a yellow and green beak, black and white tail tips, and green legs. A bar-tailed godwit flying low above a beach with incoming waves behind. The bird is flying right, caught here with its wings low. Its main body is soft brown coloured and its wings grey and white. A great black-backed gull standing facing right in seawater between a sandy beach in front and a row of rocks behind and sea splashing beyond that. The bird has a white front and black back, black and white tipped tail, and yellow/orange beak. Looking across seawater to a sandy beach and green dunes with a white lighthouse at the right side. In the foreground are two strips of sand running horizontally in the sea. In the longest strip we can see, from left to right, about a dozen large black cormorant birds, including one in the air. In front of that, and to the right, a smaller strip of sand has about half a dozen smaller bar-tailed godwits standing on it.

Double the Loot

The local oak trees have been dropping acorns for the last week or so, and as a result many of the birds aren’t quite as interested in my feeders. The blue jays especially—why go for peanuts when acorns are everywhere? Acorns seem to be their absolute favorite.

Here’s a picture from a while back, taken during one of those times when the blue jays were stocking up on peanuts instead.

"A blue jay—Cyanocitta cristata—stands boldly on a wooden rail, its posture full of confidence and mischief. Its feathers shimmer in layered shades of electric blue, soft gray, and crisp white, each one lying neatly against the next like carefully arranged tiles. The black markings around its face form a sharp, mask‑like pattern that gives the bird an alert, almost cunning expression. Clamped in its beak are two whole peanuts, held crosswise with surprising precision. The jay’s beak is slightly parted, just enough to show how it has maneuvered both peanuts into place. You can almost imagine the quick, clever movements it used to gather them—one snatched, then the second tucked in like a prize. The background fades into a soft blur of muted greens and browns, making the bird stand out as the undeniable star of the moment. Yesterday morning, while I was outside tending to my bird feeders, I looked up and noticed something moving through the sky on a path that would take it directly over my backyard. For a split second I wondered—is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it was a very big bird. As I focused on it, I realized it was a bald eagle, and there I stood flat‑footed, a scooper full of seed in my hand and my camera sitting a good hundred feet away inside the back door.

There was no chance of making it inside, grabbing the camera, and getting back out before the eagle passed, so I simply watched. It floated by with that lazy, effortless glide they use when they’re not in any hurry, until it disappeared behind the forest trees. I’ve photographed eagles before, but always at a much greater distance. In my mind’s eye, I can picture the detail I would have captured if I’d had the camera with me—more than what’s in the photograph I’m showing you today, which I took a little over two years ago. That’s how these things tend to go more often than not. It’s just the way of it.

Life is full of missed opportunities—moments you lose for one reason or another. The important thing is not to close yourself off from future opportunities because of early choices. Those mistakes can narrow your path more and more as the years pass. One question that always appears on a job application is your level of education; employers want to know you can read, write, add, and subtract. Another is your criminal history; they don’t want someone who might steal from them. Don’t cut yourself off. Graduate. Stay out of trouble. Keep your future open.

Silent Sovereign "A Haliaeetus leucocephalus—the bald eagle—fills the frame in a moment of pure, suspended power. Its wings stretch outward in a broad, commanding span, each feather sharply defined like individual strokes of a master painter’s brush. The dark chocolate‑brown wings contrast fiercely with the bright white of its head and tail, creating that iconic pattern known across the continent. The eagle’s body tilts slightly as it rides invisible currents of air, giving the sense that it’s both floating and driving forward with purpose. Its yellow beak curves like a polished blade, and though the background is a clean, bright white, the bird’s gaze feels unmistakably intense—focused, sovereign, aware of everything below. The tail feathers flare subtly, helping the eagle steer with effortless precision.
