The sun is bright, but if you have a compact camera with a small-diameter lens, you may be able to use certified eclipse glasses as a filter to photograph it. You might be able to use your phone too, particularly if it has an expert/manual mode.
This is the sun from a few minutes ago. The eclipse is due to start later this evening so I want to be prepared.
Important: the eclipse-glasses filter must completely cover the camera lens, with no gaps, and must be undamaged. Never look at the Sun through an optical viewfinder.
I used the rear screen and tilted it so I wasn’t looking towards the sun while taking the photo.
This was taken with a Sony RX100 IV at its maximum 70mm-equivalent zoom, so the sun was tiny in the original image.
Settings: Manual mode, ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/200 second. I used manual focus, set just short of infinity.
Finally, because the Sun occupied such a small part of the image, I cropped it heavily and enlarged it using Lightroom Classic’s Super Resolution.
The final image is still only 1099 × 733 pixels, but if I can replicate this later it’ll be a nice record of the eclipse.
Meanwhile, how do I tag a photo of the sun? Is it a tag describing where it was shot (Blarney) or the position of the object in space (Milky Way, the Local Group, Virgo Supercluster, Laniakea Supercluster)?
