Black-and-white photograph of a hanging illuminated sign reading “DISHES” above the dish-return area at Kaari shopping centre in Helsinki. Below it, a smaller Finnish sign reads “Astianpalautus” (“dish return”). The stark lighting, deep black background and geometric metal structures give the otherwise mundane food-court sign an unexpectedly graphic, almost cinematic appearance.

Hazardous day

#Caution #Signage #LookDown #Photography

An aged, blue linoleum floor features numerous strips of hazard tape and paint. The central grouping of these adhesive applications has six horizontal lines and two vertical lines of red-and-white striped tape. There's a bright yellow bollard in the top left corner, and two shoes with blue uppers and red soles at the base of the image. Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

A wall-mounted box has been completely covered in yellow-and-black hazard tape. The wall itself is painted white and ceiling lights cast shadows to the left and right. A blue plastic handrail is below the box. United Kingdom health and safety regulations state that markings should be placed around obstacles or dangerous locations. This includes where any of the following present a risk: people tripping or falling; objects falling, and people or vehicles colliding with objects. Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Standing at a doorway and looking down to aged and stained blue linoleum. There are two stickers on the ground, both mostly yellow in colour. One has an x, or more accurately, a multiplication sign (×), filled with a red and white stripe pattern. The other reads "One way" and has an upward point arrow filled with white and yellow stripes. There's a polygon of warm yellow linoleum in the top right corner, and two shoes with blue uppers and red soles at the base of the image. Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, UK. A crow lifted off the top of the barrier around the old Paintwell shop on Cornmarket Street, Cork, as I approached to get a closer shot. Its friends had already departed, but this one was cleaning its feathers and only looked up a moment b ...

A black crow caught mid-launch with both wings raised and legs trailing, in front of the rendered gable of a disused corner building carrying a faded yellow sign reading PAINTWELL and PÉINT MHAITH, a vertical PAINTWELL sign running down the corner, ivy spreading across the render, boarded upper windows, and blue steel site barriers across the front.

2 Silver Street: the freestanding, monolith-like sign for this apartment building is made with dark grey metal panels and has protruding stainless-steel lettering (plus one numeral). Taken at an angle, this photo crops out the final letter T. The metal has weathered a little and the letters are somewhat discoloured. A blue sky with wispy clouds is visible in the top left corner. TW EL VE / 12

#ReadingUK #Architecture #Signage #Photography

A redbrick office building has been painted black, except for its stylised street number ("TW EL VE"). On the street level to the left, the metallic gates to the structure's parking garage feature an interesting geometric pattern which is mirrored by a screen behind the reception area window on the right. 12 Forbury Road, Reading, Berkshire, UK. 30–31 Friar St., Reading

#ReadingUK #Signage #StreetPhotography #Photography

An urban passageway. The old brick buildings on the left feature many white-framed windows and numerous air-conditioning (or perhaps heat pump) units. Refuse bins are lined up along side it. On the right, a relatively modern office/retail building, with concrete walls, wood panelling, and a mesh-screened balcony. Attached to the latter is a vertical hanging sign that reads "30—31 Friar Street." The em-dash is stylistically wrong (it should be an en-dash), but I don't mind it. Reading, Berkshire, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

In a paved alley, one section of an otherwise concrete-and-glass building has a brickwork section with a small sash window in the middle. The wall has been painted black and has "30—31" painted in large white numerals, with the extra-long dash being broken by the window. 30–31 Friar Street, Reading, Berkshire, UK.
