For and (“Kalorienbombe” / calorie bomb), here’s a tray of cookies shaped like cats — and other creatures — from our old neighborhood bakery Margaret Palca Bakes. I often brought home a bag of these for my family. Margaret retired and closed up shop after 40 years, and I still miss her cookies, cakes, and legendary brownies.

Ube leche flan from the bakery Purple Dough in Queens. Still one of my favorite desserts from childhood.
