For #Caturday and #FotoVorschlag (“Kalorienbombe” / calorie bomb), here’s a tray of cookies shaped like cats — and other creatures — from our old neighborhood bakery Margaret Palca Bakes. I often brought home a bag of these for my family. Margaret retired and closed up shop after 40 years, and I still miss her cookies, cakes, and legendary brownies.

Angled view looking up at a brick building facade under a blue sky with white clouds. A storefront sign projects outward from the building, its two ends attached to the facade while its midpoint extends out furthest, so that it can be more easily read from the sidewalk and creates a triangle through which we can see the sky. The visible side reads “Sergi’s Images” and I presume the other side says the same thing. Underneath is a large window made of triangular and trapezoidal panels that reflect the sky and a tree across the street, as well as, most notably, the triangle made by the sign — in effect creating a square out of the sign’s actual and reflected sides. Power cables crisscross the sky overhead. The image is striking for its geometric lines and shapes.

This has some bumps, at least! Meet Shelby, one of the mascots of Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal — famously a waterway of toxic sludge that has been undergoing a frustratingly slow cleanup effort for decades. Shelby is one of “three cheerful mutants” representing the microscopic life of the canal. More info on the wall sign if you zoom in, and the Wikipedia article on the Gowanus is a fascinating read.

Passed by this boat on my way to see the tall ships docked at the Brooklyn waterfront. I thought this was a working fire boat, but it turns out to be a retired FDNY firefighting vessel from the 1960s that’s now used as a floating restaurant — named Fireboat, naturally.

I wasn’t sure I had anything for this theme, but here’s Deborah Kass’ “OY/YO” sculpture in front of the Brooklyn Museum. Seen as “YO” when you approach from one direction and “OY” from the other, it’s supposed to pay tribute to the slang vocabulary of Brooklyn’s Italian, Black, and Jewish communities. I feel the concept borders a bit on cringey stereotyping, but I do think the big yellow letters are fun.
