At least there are some blackberries with a few juicy druplets. It looks as if at least half didn't set at all. I don't know...

Scanty, tiny blackberries with sparse druplets, amid scruffy remains of flowers that never set, are a sad reminder of how droughty it has been in the Evergreen State. The black and red berries are set among still abundant green, palmate and dentate leaves and thorny stems. Slim pickings this year.

Long hot summer... a walk in a droughty woods, with smoke filling the air; dried out rosehips: they're all that way now; curled up brown crispy maple leaves on boulder piles.

A small grassy clearing in a wooded trail is full of sere grasses and dry crispy leaves. The air is full of smoke. The trees are green, but they are dropping leaves on the trail. The sky is glaring white. It's early in the day but already hot. A cluster of bright red rosehips grows amid still - green leaves. Sadly, the hips are dry and leathery. Most of the berries around here are dry and often hard. I wonder how the birds will fare, because although most overwintering berries do get raisiny, they usually are soft, not dry nubbins like this year. Scattered dry crisp leaves on a stack of rough hewn gray granitic boulders. The leaves may look autumnal, but they are brown rather than yellow. They are crispy and friable, not flexible. It's depressing. And yes, that's smoke in the air.
