Landscape Moods.

I love this view from the deck of my in-laws’ house in Idaho, looking out at the river and the forest beyond: changing with the clouds and mist and light, endlessly fascinating. It’s been many years since I’ve seen it in autumn or winter but I can imagine how breathtaking it would be then, too.

Series of panoramic photos of the same vista: a wide field sloping down to some trees and tiny houses beside a ribbon of highway bordering a river. Hills rise on the river’s far side, covered by a dense forest of pines and firs. Tall pines stand in the foreground at the right edge of the scene. In this photo it’s late afternoon, with the setting sun shining through the pines at right and casting golden light on the field. Thick white clouds move across the vivid blue sky. Second in a series, taken about an hour and a half after the previous photo. The sun has gone behind the forested hills, leaving the landscape still visible but increasingly in shadow. The sky is overcast with low clouds, and a blue evening light lies over everything, magical and mysterious. Third in a series, taken in the evening the next day. The landscape is dark and indistinct, the forest a wall of shadow, with a low pale fog covering the sky and outlining the treetops. The lit windows of the distant houses are tiny points of light in the field below. Fourth in a series, taken before sunrise the next morning. The landscape wears muted greens and browns in the soft dawn light, with fog softening the treetops and rising into a pale blue sky with clouds.

“Here on the river I have known peace and beauty such as I never knew in any other place. There is always work here that I need to be doing and I have many worries... But I am always surprised, when I look back on times here that I know to have been laborious or worrisome or sad, to discover that they were never out of the presence of peace and beauty, for here I have been always in the world itself.”
— Wendell Berry

From a green field that slopes down to a fenced border and a tree-lined highway at the edge of the water, we see the wide, tranquil Clearwater River meander between hills into the distance — the nearer hills green with conifer forests, the farther ones brown and bare. The sky is a pale afternoon blue with wisps of high white clouds.
