This weekend in Portsmouth the International Kite Festival takes place on Southsea Common. It's the UK's largest kite festival and is free to attend, plus buses are free in Portsmouth this weekend too.

This was from 2012. We won't be able to attend this year's, sadly.

It's a bright and sunny day but there are plenty of big, bubbly, white clouds in the sky to break up the blue sky overhead. We're standing in a city's common space; a field of short grass that stretches for quite some way into the distance where trees line one edge, stretching away and to the left, the tops of a church tower and a few taller buildings just poking over the dark greenery. A far taller, more distant tower in the stylised shape of a spinnaker sail can also be seen about a third of the way in from the right but a lot of the activity in the foreground is blocking it. There are many people on the common with us, walking or standing in pairs and families for the most part, dressed for a warm day in short-sleeved tops. The people head in all directions as there are sights to behold all around, but particularly in the air where a few dozen kites hover in the air. The kites are all shapes and sizes and colours with some inflatable cartoon characters - a pig, Sylvester the cat, Tw

Done - much better test of the Kite Drone today, proving most of the camera technology aboard the new sensor box works. The Cody kite remains absurdly hard work to keep in the air, and so I will look forward to repairing the Delta for future flights.

Today really marks the end of any serious testing for a while - too many commitments for the start of the semester. Nevertheless, given that, at the start of March, absolutely none of this existed, nor did I have the know-how, I do think 'Kite Drone Summer' has gone well, overall.

A truly difficult test day with the Kite Drone on former RAF Davidstow Moor - high winds flattened the kite into the ground at every opportunity, and prevented much altitude from being gained when things were stable. Utterly exhausting, frustrating work trying to keep it from violently coming to rest - let no-one say that one is merely playing with kites when doing this kind of work! A couple of representative shots below.
