Seven weeks today we'll be off on our last trip of the year, heading down to the Canary Islands and taking my in-laws along this time. That should prove interesting.

The first time we were in Tenerife we tried to visit a solar observatory near Mount Teide but a volcanic eruption on a nearby island meant the telescopes were in use. Hopefully, this time we'll make it.

We're at high altitude on a volcanic, rocky surface with stony, hilly slopes overlapping ahead of us. Cloud low enough to touch the mountainous height we're at is just dissipating, leaving a mostly blue sky overhead and ghostly sheets of mist clinging to some of the hard ground. On a hill ridge a few hundred metres ahead we can see some white buildings. Some are rectangular but there are domes on a few which shows this to be a cluster of observatories. On the highest part of the curved ridge to the left there's a tall radio antenna. There's a coolness in the air from the height and the vanishing cloud cover.
