A to just ten years ago, the first time we ever cruised in the Mediterranean. We hit a lot of ancient sites on that trip because there are a lot of them about and this photo from Mykonos was taken after exploring ruins on the nearby island of Delos.

A minimalist shot in portrait orientation, broadly featuring just two colours. It's a hot, bright, sunny day with not a cloud in the piercing blue sky that brightens to a white-blue glow near the top left, close to where the sun is throwing a few lens flares into the scene. The bottom of the image contains a building, typical of Greek islands with its thick walls plastered and painted white. The building is a rough-contoured wall at the back of a small church with a set of steps up to a flat area that leads to a doorway barely visible behind another wall in front. Two young women are standing on the flat surface, one mostly behind a wall but clearly posing for her friend who's aiming a point-and-click camera at her. The wall of the church is about twice the woman's height where she's standing but it rises up twice that to a small niche that opens up and appears to hold a bell within its space.

Seven weeks today we'll be off on our last trip of the year, heading down to the Canary Islands and taking my in-laws along this time. That should prove interesting.

The first time we were in Tenerife we tried to visit a solar observatory near Mount Teide but a volcanic eruption on a nearby island meant the telescopes were in use. Hopefully, this time we'll make it.

We're at high altitude on a volcanic, rocky surface with stony, hilly slopes overlapping ahead of us. Cloud low enough to touch the mountainous height we're at is just dissipating, leaving a mostly blue sky overhead and ghostly sheets of mist clinging to some of the hard ground. On a hill ridge a few hundred metres ahead we can see some white buildings. Some are rectangular but there are domes on a few which shows this to be a cluster of observatories. On the highest part of the curved ridge to the left there's a tall radio antenna. There's a coolness in the air from the height and the vanishing cloud cover.

Arriving at Puntarenas in Costa Rica, early in the morning earlier this year for this week. The tug boat is ready to assist with our ship's docking along the long pier that juts out from the mainland.

It's early morning with the sun low in a cloudless sky just out of sight to the right of view casting a pale but warm golden glow over the scene. We're on the balcony of a ship just coming into dock at a long pier that's behind us. Our view is across the water on the other side which is flat, textured slightly like leather with the gentlest of sea motions, and the colours shift from an inky blue-black near us on the left to a shimmering golden reflection of the sun's influence on the right and towards the horizon. There's a low, long, straight stretch of land that angles slightly away from us across the horizon, framed by a long line of hills behind that are hazy with a faint morning mist and then disappear into the glow from the sun. A tug boat is near us, below and to the left. It's a typical, low, fat lozenge shape protected by rubber tyres mounted around its dark blue hull. The bridge is a squat, raised section near its front and it's bright yellow. It feels quiet and very peaceful

Hopped on a cruise ship for the weekend to Belgium. We're docked in Zeebrugge today, somewhere we've been manyntimes when visiting Bruges, Ghent, or Blankenberge. Today, to be different, we took the tram to Knokke for a look around. Warm, windy, one torrential downpour, and lots of art around this seaside town. Currently enjoying a Belgian ale in the sun before we head back to the ship and home tomorrow.

It's a bright, sunny day with a few puffy white clouds in the deep blue sky. We're standing on a grassy central area of a roundabout in a town. A few trees frame the scene and there are some houses with steep, tiled roofs in the background. The main focus is an art sculpture here. It's about eight metres high and it's of two humanoid forms in orange. One has its back to us, partly obscuring the other one it's facing, as if in conversation.

For here's P&O Cruises Azura in Split, Croatia in 2023. She's a Grand-class ship - our favourite class; not too big, not too small - and ships of P&O, Princess, and now Carnival in Australia operate ships of this type.

It's a hot, sunny day with barely a cloud in the sky and those only in the distance as a small streak over the horizon. We're standing on the hard surface of a commercial port where we would be able to see out across a fairly calm blue sea to a strip of land were it not for a cruise ship obstructing much of the view. The ship is tied up alongside with its bow pointing towards us and to the left, and we're approaching it as are a number of people ahead of us. The ship's hull is largely white but the bow has a stylised form of the Union Flag painted on it, wrapping around the curved, pointing form. We can see a stack of decks rising up towards the middle and aft of the ship and at the front the glass-fronted bridge extends out past the width of the vessel to allow the officers full views either side.

For here's the view across Prince Rupert Bay from Fort Shirley n the north of Dominica last year. We had one of the best excursions ever on that day on this particular Caribbean island.

A portrait orientation view looking across a flat, shallow bay to a hilly landscape on the other side. We're in the Caribbean and it's a day of big bubbling cloud which almost covers the entire sky and reaches down to caress the tops of the dark, verdant land across the water. It's still very warm here and bright where the sun the touches. The shoreline at our feet is short, green grass that becomes a a couple of metres of small, rounded rocks until it meets the bay. A palm tree perhaps five metres high with a thin trunk that curves out a little to the right and towards the sea obscures a little of the scenery just on the left side of the image and there are more palm leaves jutting in from that side where another tree grows nearby just out of sight. Darker, more compact leaves of another type of small tree intrude on the right side.

For here's the Brittany Ferries vessel, Mont St Michel, which sails a regular service between our home city of Portsmouth and Caen in the north of France. This was taken as she was heading to the UK while we were on our way out aboard a Virgin cruise ship in 2021.

It's the evening, just after the sun has set over the horizon but while there's still light in the sky. We're on a cruise ship heading out to sea. The water is calm and grey, textured with shallow shadows of ripples to resemble the skin of an elephant stretched taut. The sky is pale and a colourless grey at the top that blends into a pale yellow nearer the horizon where a featureless flat sheet of darker grey cloud gathers. A vehicle and passenger ferry is passing us a couple of hundred metres away, heading to the left and leaving a trough of white foam in its wake. The ferry is white with blue trim on its hull above the water line and to mark the main deck area. "Brittany Ferries" is written on the side of the vessel and the company's stylised logo of a blue and orange wave is next to the wording also present on the funnel housing towards the ship's aft.

Been quite a while since I wrote anything on my site - work and heat exhaustion, let's pretend - but it's and I have just published a write-up and a load of photos from a cruise last year along Norway's second longest fjord, Hardangerfjord, so here's one as a treat. This is the village of Ænes and it's pretty bloody lovely, I think we can all agree.

We're on a ship on a wide fjord looking across to land. It's a bright, sunny day but there's a cool tone and the landscape tells us that it's chilly. Pale, yellow-green grass forms a low plateau set just back from the water's edge and serves as the base for a spread-out village of isolated houses and a white-walled church with tower and black roof. A dense gathering of trees serves as a border behind the village before mountains rise up behind and dwarf the man-made structures in the foreground. We can see the sloping side of one tree-covered mountain to the left and the ground rises towards the right into dark forest-land. In the distance, pale with haze, ice and snow-capped mountains form a range under the crisp blue sky.
