Suter was born in Buenos Aires. Her mother, Elisabeth Wild, was an Austrian-born, noted collage artist. (see below) At the age of 12, Suter moved to Basel, Switzerland with her family. via W
Her most important early production comprises works on paper – drawings, collages and large colourfully tinted sheets, shown at Swiss galleries during the 1970s. In 1982 she visited Latin America, and the following year settled in Panajachel, Guatemala. The atmosphere of the area, its climate, vegetation and animals, became her subjects. In this ecosystem she replaced paper with canvas mounted on stretchers. awarewomenartists

Wild’s art only began to gain public recognition in later life, in tandem with her daughter, the painter Vivian Suter. Wild and Suter were both championed by curator Adam Szymczyk, who gave them a two-person show at the Kunsthalle Basel in 2014 and featured them his 2017 Documenta. Wild also exhibited at the Power Plant, Toronto, in 2017 and had a solo show at Carbon 12 in Dubai last year. artreview

In Buenos Aires, she worked as a textile designer, and later married a textile factory owner August Wild. In 1962 she and her husband sold their company and moved the family to Basel. My great Guatemalan adventure visiting and writing about Vivian Suter. Her latest exhibit, with 500 paintings, opens in Paris next week. Art Basel editorial. Great photos by Flavio Karrer.

The fluidity of Suter’s approach to painting and mark-making conveys an ecological sensitivity to the interconnections between people and place. hyperallergic.com
