In 1993 Brenda and Wanda Henson bought land outside Ovett, Mississippi, and opened a feminist, lesbian-run retreat and food bank in a county that made its feelings clear immediately. Somebody left a dead dog on their mailbox.

They didn't leave. They ran the pantry. They kept the gate open, and over years the temperature around them changed — which is the least dramatic and most difficult kind of victory there is.

Then: a registry that said no, a long administrative grind, two constitutional injunctions, and three years and ten months of being told their family was not the kind the state writes down. On Friday, in Santa Cruz, Fabiana Banzer and Scarlett Rocha were recorded as married. Banzer announced it on Facebook the next day the way you'd announce a birthday.

Article 63 still defines marriage as a woman and a man. This was won case by case, not by statute. It is a crack in a wall.

David Aruquipa, whose own union was the 2020 ruling that made this possible, refused to let last week be called a beginning. He called it a continuity.
