They gave the Justice Department to a man whose whole career is one client. They invented a bureaucratic phrase so they'd never have to type the word transgender. They ran a candidate who wants me dead and he pulled ninety votes and declared victory anyway.

And through every bit of it we keep doing the unglamorous, immortal thing — showing up at the pharmacy counter, filing the appeal, driving somebody's kid four states to a clinic, marrying each other in a country that will honor it and getting told no by the country that won't, and marrying each other again anyway.

They have the letterhead. We have the arithmetic.

A man, Todd Blanche, in a dark suit and orange tie speaks into a microphone while gesturing with his hand, seated at a hearing or conference table. Blurred audience members sit in the background.

Two years ago Sammy Takyi stood in a two-hectare plot in Begoro and considered cutting down everything he had planted. He was tired. Anyone would be.

He didn't. He's still growing cocoa under plantain shade, still waiting out the four-to-five-year gap before a tree pays anything at all, still turning down the miners' cash at his fence line — while a bag of his beans lost about US$88 of its value. His family processes what they can into chocolate and spices themselves.

That's what value-capture looks like when nobody helps you do it. Not courage exactly. A willingness to keep doing the slow correct thing in front of an audience trained to find slowness boring.

In 1993 Brenda and Wanda Henson bought land outside Ovett, Mississippi, and opened a feminist, lesbian-run retreat and food bank in a county that made its feelings clear immediately. Somebody left a dead dog on their mailbox.

They didn't leave. They ran the pantry. They kept the gate open, and over years the temperature around them changed — which is the least dramatic and most difficult kind of victory there is.

Nobody photographs the long middle. That's the part where the root goes down.

This runs on readers, not an ad network — no oligarch upstairs getting nervous about a sentence. If it's worth a morning to you: https://thistleandmoss.com/upgrade?utm_source=PixelFed&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-Wendy-New-RSS

They applied on 12 October 2022.

Then: a registry that said no, a long administrative grind, two constitutional injunctions, and three years and ten months of being told their family was not the kind the state writes down. On Friday, in Santa Cruz, Fabiana Banzer and Scarlett Rocha were recorded as married. Banzer announced it on Facebook the next day the way you'd announce a birthday.

Article 63 still defines marriage as a woman and a man. This was won case by case, not by statute. It is a crack in a wall.

David Aruquipa, whose own union was the 2020 ruling that made this possible, refused to let last week be called a beginning. He called it a continuity.

Two women in white dresses and pants walk hand in hand down outdoor steps, one holding a small bouquet of dried flowers. The scene is bright and minimal with a cloudy sky and weathered gray and white walls.
